FLAKING CLEAR COAT

Under Oxidation we discussed why manufacturers use clear coat and the important role it plays in protecting the fragile poly-carbonate plastic lens. The coating bonds with the lens differently depending on its formula and the mix of plastic used for the lens. Good news is that the flaking coating can be repaired. If the bond between the coating and lens is not strong, flaking is inevitable. Though it can happen to even an expensive Porsche headlight it is prone to cheaper aftermarket lights. Technician thoroughly removes the old failing coating leaving nothing behind but the clean plastic lens. A fresh new lens is fabricated out of this damaged plastic. The lens is then prepped to receive a fresh new clear coat. The end result is an astonishing shiny look not much different than a new lens.
