buff and shine vs. modern
permanent lens restoration

The good news is that when it comes to professional restoration there are only two main methods The classic buff and shine done mostly by auto detailers , and the Modern Permeant Restoration . For years auto detailers buffing the lens , and home remedies were only option to clean the oxidized lens . These methods can make a difference by removing some of the oxidation that forms on the lens , but they have few major flaws and damaging side effects.

In more severe cases where oxidation has started on the plastic itself , buffing alone cannot fully remove the oxidation so surface cleaning remains the only option , but most importantly they have no means of replacing the protective factory coating they just removed . Auto detailers may use wax as an alternative . Wax is meant for a clear coat on the paint and is not a durable option . A simple carwash is all you need to wash off the wax leaving your lens exposed to elements significantly shortening its life . Without protection instead of the coating getting oxidized the plastic itself starts to break down . If not treated the damaged lens may start to have spider web cracks and fractures .
Due to the damage classic buff and shine causes to the expensive headlight in the long run vivid headlight does not offer this service and encourages you to opt for a proper permanent restoration .
We offer Modern Permanent Restoration which follows the manufacturer’s process in producing a new lens . The technician starts by wet sanding the lens removing the oxidized clear coat and the damaged plastic , leaving nothing behind . The skilled technician uses gradually increasing grit wet sanding and buffing to bring the lens back to a like – new rejuvenated state removing all scratches and imperfections . Then like a newly manufactured lens , a layer of clear coat is applied . ( Vivid headlight uses proprietary methods to ensure the coating never cracks or peels off . )

Clearcoat permanently fills in microscopic imperfections within the lens giving it that new look Vivid is famous for , and provides incredible durability .
WHAT CAUSES THE YELLOW MY LENS ? AND THE IMPORTANCE OF UV PROTECTIVE COATING
Most cars manufactured after the 1990s use reflector , or projection headlights , with lens , typically made of poly – carbonate plastic . Today’s modern Plastic lens has many advantages compared to the classic glass lens . It can be easily molded into any shape or design , it is durable , extremely lightweight , and it does not shatter , but it has one major flaw .

Like most other materials short of glass plastic cannot withstand the sun’s powerful UV rays .

It did not take the highly motivated manufacturers long to come up with a solution to this one weakness . A simple yet effective solution good enough to replace the glass lens forever

A UV protective coating similar to a clear coat is sprayed on the lens as the first line of defense . This coating breaks down instead of the plastic giving the lens incredible durability , extending its life by years . The yellowing begins gradually with UV exposure as the coating oxidizes and starts to break down , process usually starts from the top where it has the most exposure to UV rays and takes over the entire lens . If not taken care of eventually the plastic itself start to break down . Left untreated this can even cause hair fractures , and spider web cracks that start to form within the lens itself .
HOW COME ONLY THE SURFACE OXIDIZES EVEN THOUGH LIGHT PENETRATES THROUGH THE CLEAR LENS ?
The oxidation process called Photo – degradation causes chain scission in the polymer material which results in the loss of important physical properties such as impact strength , tensile strength , elongation at break , etc. and can be observed as cracking , chalking and color changes since plastics are made of polymers of carbon , that sunlight breaks down larger plastics into carbon over time , Photo – oxidation is caused by the action of UV light in the presence of oxygen , and due to its limited penetration capability , it takes place only on the surface and subsurface layers of polymer .
